Using an app called Suno, an AI generated band garnered over half a million unwitting listeners on Spotify. Fans began sensing something was off while looking for more information about the band on their social media profiles, and questions of their actual existence began circulating on Reddit.
Because Spotify does not require the use of AI to be disclosed to users, many fans are crying foul. Spotify is not alone in their plethora of derivative-AI-produced music; one just has to open YouTube or TikTok to quickly find countless hours of AI-made music or videos, with users unable to set search filters to limit them from popping up in their algorithm.
Spotify is facing additional criticisms surrounding AI, prompting artists to pull their music from their catalogue. CEO and co-founder Daniel Ek has recently launched a new endeavor, called Prima Meteria, an AI military program. In a statement released on their social media, the band Deerhoof said, “Daniel Ek uses $700 million of his Spotify fortune to become chairman of AI battle tech company’ was not a headline we enjoyed reading this week. We don’t want our music killing people. We don’t want our success being tied to AI battle tech.”
